    2011 APHE National Conference

“The Best and the Brightest Under the Sun”

    Basics & Beyond

    February 23-25, 2011
    Fort Myers, Florida

We will launch our 2011 National Conference in sunny Florida this coming year and everyone should plan to be there.  It will be a new experience for everyone.  We will be on the west coast of Florida in the gorgeous setting of Ft. Myers which is near the unforgettable Sanibel Island.  Our hosts this year are a first, as we will be at the incredible Florida Gulf Coast University.  It is an environmental school built next to a wildlife refuge with resident alligators, many species of turtle, fish and birds and a walking path that is home to many of Florida’s amazing resident creatures.  It is a green school committed to civic responsibility and community service and they have truly embraced humane education on many levels.

Our host hotel is the brand new Hilton Garden Inn, just two miles from the airport and the university.  Free shuttle service will be available almost around the clock.  A double room, including a full buffet breakfast for two is $119 a night and the rooms include: refrigerator, microwave, coffee maker and free wireless Internet.  They have a pool and many other amenities.  Our mixer and banquet/auction will be held right in the hotel for your convenience and the manager has offered a free reception on the last evening of our conference with wine, beer and snacks.

Our hope for this year is to bring you some amazing speakers from all over the country that cover everything from basic program ideas and tools to unique projects that help to increase your knowledge and provide you with ideas and inspiration.  You will hear from the Dean of the College of Education and two professors at the university about how they have incorporated humane education into an academic setting and how very successful that has been.  You will see some of the innovative projects that the honors student teams have been doing at the shelters and rescues in their community.

We are planning an optional excursion for Saturday, February 26 that will give you a taste of the gorgeous Florida environment and allow you to relax in the sun and share time with new and old friends.

Please plan to join us in Florida for Conference 2011; we will look forward to seeing you there!
